TOP-CLASS SPRING UNRACED ACTION AT CLONMEL

Peter Farrell

The opening round of the Spring ON2/ON3 Unraced took centre stage at Clonmel Greyhound Stadium on Friday night and it was Goldcash Basher who set the standard with a brilliant performance on debut.

Sent off a tight favourite at odds of 4/7, Goldcash Basher is only an October puppy, however, he showed the battling qualities of an experienced racer with a top-class display for joint owners, Michael Doyle and Jack Meade. A son of Dorotas Wildcat and Golden Mist, ‘Basher’ was forced to play second fiddle to Chasing Super in the early exchanges and it remained this way until mid-way down the back where the favourite began to assert. Taking charge at the penultimate bend, Goldcash Basher showed the superior stamina in the closing stages to draw clear of his rivals and he recorded a five length victory over Chasing Super, in a brisk 28.74 .10s.

JACK NEXT BEST

Thats It Jack wasn’t too far away in terms of recording the quickest time of the opening round for Liam Cahill and Tony Lacey. Another September puppy, this fellow qualified in with an impressive 29.37 outing around Kilkenny and as such, he was installed as the 1/2 favourite to land the spoils. Running from trap three, the son of Malachi emerged from a level break to lead Golden Bullet into the back. Stamping his authority at the midway point, ‘Jack’ opened a healthy lead and crossed the line four lengths clear of his rival in a fine 28.79 .10s.

DREAM COMFORTABLE

Brian McCarthy and Daniel Brassil recorded a lovely victory in heat one as Caoimhes Dream recorded a comprehensive win for connections. Running from trap one, the September puppy went off as the 2/1 joint favourite and he trapped lively to lead from trap one. Once in front, the son of Broadstrand Bono and Conquering Queen was never headed as he romped to three and a half length victory over Springwood Fred in second. The time was 29.04 .10s.
