RPGTV’S GREAT WORK

Ian Fortune

It was exciting news when it was announced that RPGTV would be covering the Boylesports Derby from the third round onwards, but little did we know at the time how valuable the service would become given the current Covid-19 crisis.

Their coverage of the Derby has been first rate and a great relief to those that can’t be on track. Great credit must go to the production team of Clive and Dave Lawrence and Jonathan Kay, while Robert Catterson has been doing sterling work on track interviewing anyone that stood still for more than 30 seconds.

Their coverage of the competition will of course continue on Saturday night and they are planning a little bit more than the norm. Before then, RPGTV will host the Irish focus this evening at the conclusion of racing.

The feature of this evening’s live action is the final of the 74th East Anglian Derby at Yarmouth and there will be plenty of interesting Irish observers with many of the field starting their career on these shores. In fact, with the exception of Droopys Carat, they all started off on this side of the water.

There is also a link to Saturday’s Derby decider with the inside runner Kilara Lion a litter brother to Kilara Icon. No doubt the ‘Kilara’ men Brian Kennedy and Philip O’Keeffe will be hoping the Lion can roar this evening.

The race to the turn will be all-important with the favourite and former Dundalk racer, Levante Beach expected to be hard to contain, although Lastfortheroad, who was bred by Francie Murray, is also likely to up fast. It could be a great contest.

As stated, the Irish focus will run at the conclusion of the live action at approximately 9.30pm and it’s no surprise that the Derby and Derby Plate will headline the review. They will also be looking at the final of the Champion Open Unraced from Kilkenny, the final of the Dave Collins Munster Oaks from Waterford, while Skywalker Logan’s wonderful victory in the Emerald Isle Casino Irish Cambridgeshire will also be featured.
