Larry Buggy has shared his favourite racing memory, the story of a remarkable greyhound, Kilgraney Tomson.
Kilgraney Tomson was bred and reared in Kilgraney kennels. With both his sire, Aries Son, and dam, Lady Kilgraney, having been great servants to the kennel, he held a special place in Larry’s heart. Tomson (Jul 11) was owned by Thomas Buggy and trained by his mother Mary, so it was a family affair all round.
Tomson gave Mary her first Classic success, winning the Tipperary Cup in 2013 before going on to Shelbourne Park to take his biggest win, the 2014 Gold Cup. Tomson loved the red jacket and duly obliged as one of the outsiders at 5/1. His astonishing pace to the first bend stole the race to give the Buggys a night they will never forget.
Larry recalls that Tomson was a remarkable greyhound, with guts and determination. At 4 years of age he recorded his fastest career win of 28.32 at Shelbourne Park. He never gave up and that's what made him so special to Larry and Thomas.
Tomson still resides at Kilgraney kennels and enjoys the occasional gallop but sincerely misses the joy of racing.
