The ‘Friends and Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing’ group, led by legendary GAA figure Jimmy Barry Murphy, has pledged sponsorship and support to the Irish Laurels in Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium until 2021.
The group has held recent discussions with the management of Curraheen Park and the Irish Greyhound Board and have been working to raise sponsorship from within the greyhound fraternity and Cork’s business community for the event.
50% of the sponsorship money raised will go to the newly created Greyhound Care Fund, which is dedicated to funding a variety of initiatives for the care and welfare of the greyhound, including rehomings, greyhound ‘care centres’ and a full greyhound traceability system, as provided for in the Greyhound Racing Act 2019. The IGB will be matching this contribution towards prize money.
Jimmy Barry Murphy commented: “We are hugely thankful to Cork’s business community and the greyhound fraternity who have pulled together to ensure our sponsorship and support for racing in Cork for three years. We are looking forward to being at the forefront of the Laurels, one of the most prestigious events in the Irish greyhound calendar, when it begins at the end of September. We are still accepting contributions and we would encourage any business or person that wishes to have any further input to contact the group.”
Chairman of the Irish Greyhound Board, Frank Nyhan, added: “It is wonderful to see a group with greyhound racing at its core being able to make such significant contributions to the sport in Cork. I want to thank Jimmy Barry Murphy and the rest of the group for giving their time and effort to the cause. There is a thriving greyhound tradition in this part of the country, with Cork having more greyhound owners than anywhere else in Ireland. We look forward to working the ‘Friends and Supporters of Cork Greyhound Racing’ group into the 2019 Irish Laurels and beyond.”
The 2019 Laurels will begin on Saturday, 28th September and run for four consecutive Saturdays, with the final being held on Saturday, October 19th.
