Fainne Chiarrai was at his very sharpest at Kilkenny on Friday night as he set a strong standard in the second round of the Pat C Sabbath @ Stud McCalmont Cup.

The Karol Ramsbottom trained speedster flew to the turn and was always dominant as he emerged an easy seven and a half length scorer over Kellymount Fionn in 28.94.

Timmys Act was next fastest as he returned to winning ways in the opening heat. Tim Cliffe’s son of Ballymac Matt broke fastest and led throughout to beat fastest opening round scorer Serene Graduate by two and a half lengths in 29.08.

Urban Highway maintained his unbeaten record in the competition when leading throughout in Heat 2. Reggie Roberts’ son of Farloe Blitz went on to see off Soldier Spy by three lengths in 29.18.

James Quinlan’s Bull Run Bottle was too strong for long-time leader Ballyadams Focus in Heat 3. After moving to the fence, Bull Run Bottle never lost a stride. Moving second between the opening two bends, he chased the leader into the home straight before making his move up the rail. The son of Ballymac Eske ran out a length winner in 29.42.
