After an incredible 1-2-3 last year, it’s safe to say the Irish will, once again, travel in big numbers to Nottingham for the 2020 Star Sports, ARC & LPS English Derby.
Preparations are already underway for the classic and yesterday’s announcement of a £50,000 bonus should the winner go on to capture the Boylesports Irish Derby add further intrigue to proceedings.
Of course, the double has never been achieved in the same year, although Toms The Best, trained by the legendary Nick Savva, did manage to win both events, capturing the English Derby in 1998, a year after winning the Irish equivalent.
Others have gone close of course, including huge names Some Picture, Farloe Melody, Rapid Ranger and Westmead Hawk. In recent year’s there have been very few UK runners in our Derby. Perhaps, if there is an English winner of their own Derby, they might make the journey to Shelbourne Park in early August.
That would be a huge boost for the Boylesports Derby, although the likelihood is that if the double is to be achieved, it will be an Irish trained greyhound. We’ll wait and see.
