Newinn Taylor the new 5/4 favourite from 5/2 for the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby

Unbeaten Pestana 6/4 Second Favourite for Derby Glory
Sunday 13th September

The semi-finals of the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby didn’t disappoint on Saturday night as Shelbourne Park hosted two incredible heats.

The Graham Holland trained Newinn Taylor landed the opening heat in a blistering 29.13 which has resulted in his odds being hammered into the new 5/4 favourite from 5/2. This Produce Stakes champion will race from trap six in the final on Saturday the 19th of September in a bid to give his trainer back-to-back victories in the race.

Ballymac Cooper was second to Newinn Taylor with his odds unchanged at 8/1 to give his trainer Liam Dowling another Derby title. He races from trap five and has been consistent throughout this competition. Meenagh Miracle for Michael Corr was third to Newinn Taylor and is 33/1 to win the Derby as the only bitch in the final.

Pestana was the second semi-final winner clocking 29.39. It wasn’t his fastest clock in the Derby, but this Owen McKenna trained superstar remain unbeaten in this competition with his odds drifting slightly to 6/4 from the 5/4 joint favourite. He races from trap four and must produce his excellent pace if he is to add a second Derby title to McKenna’s CV.

Ballymac Wild finished second to Pestana meaning Kerry man Liam Dowling is doubly represented. Ballymac Wild races from trap one and is 5/1 to land the €115,000 prize. Kilara Icon grabbed third spot for trainer Robert Gleeson and is 33/1 to give the young trainer his second Derby trophy from trap three.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “As sponsors, we couldn’t have asked for a better line up in the final. Ideally Pestana would have been in trap one and Newinn Taylor is six but the draw worked out to be in Taylor’s favour seeing his odds tumble into the 5/4 favourite from 5/2. Pestana is the 6/4 second favourite, eased from 5/4 while Ballymac Wild represents value at 5/1 wearing the red jacket. We can’t wait for the final on Saturday and we wish all the finalists the best of luck.”

Black Parachute 4/6 favourite from 7/2 for Michael Fortune Memorial Plate

Lemon Boris 10/1 from 16/1 Following his Victory
Sunday 13th September

Greyhound trainer Graham Holland not only trains the favourite for the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby, but he also trains the favourite for the Michael Fortune Memorial Derby Plate as well.

Black Parachute has been made the 4/6 ante post favourite, cut from 7/2 following his 29.40 victory in the second semi-final at HQ on Saturday night. He won comfortably by three lengths to his kennel buddy Sweep The Yard in second who is the 7/2 second favourite cut from 6/1. Black Parachute races from trap one in the final while Sweep The Yard is in trap three.

Razldazl Monarch for Neilus O’Connell qualified in third spot and is 10/1 to win the €5,000 final from trap five.

Ballyhimikin Jet took a flyer from boxes in the opening heat but Ravenswood Mango was just as fast and bumped her rival at the first bend which saw her open a nice lead. This Liam O’Rourke bitch doesn’t stay the 550 yards trip strongly and was caught coming home by Lemon Boris in trap one who got back in as a reserve.

Mango races from trap two and is the 12/1 outsider despite her early pace while Lemon Boris is 10/1 from 16/1 for trainer Pat Buckley. Lemon Ozzy was third for Robert Gleeson and is 5/1 from 8/1 and takes his change from trap six.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Black Parachute has dived into the red-hot favourite at 4/6 from 7/2 and is the one to beat from trap one. Lemon Boris got back in as a reserve and has tumbled into 10/1 from 16/1 following his victory. We are looking forward to the Michael Fortune Memorial Derby Plate the final on Saturday and we wish all the finalists the best of luck.”

Pestana 6/4 from 7/4 for BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Title

Ballymac Wild 9/2 from 11/2 for Kerry Man Liam Dowling

Friday 11th September 2020

Like A Shot gave trainer Owen McKenna his first and only BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby title back in 2004 but he could be adding another one to his name as Pestana is the red-hot favourite.

Following the unfortunate news that Boylesports Xtra has been withdrawn from the Derby, Pestana has seen his odds shorten into 6/4 from 7/4. This track record holder over the 550 yards trip was 9/4 before his quarterfinal victory where he clocked 29.07 from a tricky draw in trap five.

Pestana has overcome all the challenges that have been thrown at him and on Saturday night he will be hoping to claim his spot in the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby final. He races from trap three which will suit as there is now a vacant trap in two where Boylesports Xtra would have raced from.

This makes life a little easier for the ante post favourite now but plenty of support has also arrived for Ballymac Wild who runs from trap five in the same heat. This Liam Dowling owned and trained star has improved week after week and is 9/2 from 11/2.

Newinn Taylor races from trap six in the opening heat and is the 5/2 second favourite in the outright to give trainer Graham Holland back-to-back wins as he won it last year with Lenson Bocko. Ballymac Cooper races against him from trap five and this powerful stayer is hard to ignore with his odds nibbled into 8/1 from 10/1 to win the Derby.

KIlara Icon has a tough battle on his paws in the second semi-final against Pestana but this Robert Gleeson trained brindle beauty is 33/1 from 40/1 in the ante post betting following his 29.58 win last week where he showed unbelievable pace to grab victory on the line by a short head.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “It’s unfortunate news that Boylesports Xtra will not be taking his chance in the semi-finals of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby but his withdrawal has seen Pestana shorten for outright glory. This Owen McKenna superstar is the 6/4 favourite from 7/4 to add a second Derby trophy to his mantlepiece and a first title for owner Des Grace.”

She added: “Ballymac Wild has seen support as he is a dog that has vastly improved over the course of the Derby. He represents great value at 9/2 having been trimmed from 11/2 following the withdrawal of Boylesports Xtra. Ballymac Cooper, a strong stayer is 8/1 from 10/1 for outright glory. The semi-finals this Saturday are going to be very exciting indeed and we can’t wait to see who our six finalists will be for the €115,000 prize”

Ballymac Wild Gambled Into 11/2 Third Favourite From 8/1 For BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby

Pestana Still The One To Beat At 7/4 From 3/1
Sunday 6th September 2020

Ballymac Wild’s blistering performance in the opening heat caught the eye of punters on Saturday night as he overtook Glengar Bale to go third favourite for the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

Liam Dowling’s hopeful is now 11/2 from 8/1 in the race to be crowned champion after the field was whittled down to twelve on an action-packed evening at Shelbourne Park.

He will meet the antepost favourite in the semi-finals after his 29.07 clock was matched by Pestana in the third quarter-final heat. His grip on favouritism is all the stronger at 7/4 from 3/1, with Newinn Taylor into 5/2 from 4/1 after a three-length victory in the final heat.

BoyleSports Xtra followed home the Graham Holland trained Produce Stakes winner for the second round in succession and is now a 16/1 shot from 20/1 having started the contest out at 66/1.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:  “Support for Pestana is showing no signs of easing up but Ballymac Wild’s performance has grabbed the attention of each-way backers at least. His rapid display sees him just 11/2 from 8/1 to win the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby with the competition heating up behind the favourite as we get to the business end.”

Black Parachute Dives into 7/2 Favourite from 7/1 for Michael Fortune Memorial Plate

Razldazl Monarch 10/1 from 12/1
2nd August 2020

Black Parachute stamped his authority in the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate last weekend as he skipped around HQ in a blistering 29.18 for the 550 yards trip which has seen him become the new ante post favourite.

Trained by Graham Holland, Black Parachute is now the 7/2 favourite with BoyleSports to win the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate, cut from 7/1 following his epic victory to win by six lengths to Drumdoit Bermuda (33/1).

His kennel companion Ballyhimikin Jet remains 5/1 after finishing third in his heat to the Liam O’Rourke trained Ravenswood Mango (25/1) in 29.53. Jet ran into some trouble early on and was crowded on the run up to the first bend but made up good ground to be beaten just two lengths.

The young and improving Knocknaboul Syd for Pat Buckley won his heat in 29.45 which has resulted in his chances cut into 6/1 from 8/1. He is still lightly raced but possesses plenty of pace that could see him go far in this competition.

Neilus O’Connell is in flying form and his Razldazl Monarch has been trimmed into 10/1 from 12/1 following his 29.61 win. This winner of the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial in Tralee is a consistent tracker who stays the trip at Shelbourne Park.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:“It was a pity Black Parachute was knocked out of the Derby because his 29.18 victory in the opening round of the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate is of a very high standard. It’s no surprise to see him cut into the new 7/2 favourite from 7/1 while his kennel buddy Ballyhimikin Jet remains unchanged at 5/1. Knocknaboul Syd is 6/1 from 8/1, while Razldazl Monarch is 10/1 from 12/1.

Pestana Strengthens BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Claims As 3/1 Favourite From 11/2

Newinn Taylor 4/1 From 12/1 After Rapid Victory
31st August 2020

Pestana is the one to beat in the race to become the new BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby champion after last year’s winner Lenson Bocko surrendered his crown at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.

The defending champion was beaten into third place by Toolmaker Sydney in the opening heat, but it was the last heat that featured the hot favourite to go on and claim the title as Pestana followed up his record breaking display with another blistering performance.

Owen McKenna’s star has been gambled into 3/1 from 11/2 with BoyleSports to claim the title, with Newinn Taylor plummeting into 4/1 second favourite from 12/1 after clocking an impressive 29.11 in Saturday’s third heat.  Glengar Bale is the third favourite at 9/2 from 7/1 after justifying hot odds-on favouritism in heat five.

BoyleSports Xtra finished second the heat won by Newinn Taylor and is now a 20/1 shot having started the contest out at 66/1.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:  “Pestana has been backed significantly since he broke the track record and his popularity in the market doesn’t look like receding after another impressive performance. Newinn Taylor was however slightly faster at the weekend and is the biggest danger to the favourite now at 4/1 from 12/1.”

Ballyhimikin Jet 5/1 Favourite for Michael Fortune Memorial Plate

Sweep The Yard 10/1 from 12/1 for Team Holland
Thursday 27th August

Graham Holland leads the betting for the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate with the very talented Ballyhimikin Jet.

This son of Droopys Jet – Garryvoe Budgie was brilliant in the opening round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby picking up the lead late to beat Wolfe in a fast 29.58. Jet’s Derby run came to end last week however but his recent form places him at the top of the betting at 5/1 to win the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate.

Black Parachute is another star of the Holland kennels with his odds chalked up at 7/1 to land the title. An exciting type who clocked 28.30 around Cork in a trial following his exit from the Derby meaning the Laurels must be his next target after the Derby Plate.

Degrom is a bright prospect for Pat Buckley and he shares third favouritism with his kennel buddy Knocknaboul Syd at 8/1. There is plenty to like about both these youngsters with Degrom posting a very impressive 29.63 in the opening round before getting knocked out last week.

Neilus O’Connell is in flying form with Razldazl Monarch priced up at 10/1 alongside Marie Gilbert’s two stars Doolin Prince and Oran Don. Deelish Duke for Mark O’Donovan is also 10/1 while Sweep The Yard has been trimmed into 10/1 from 12/1 following some support and is another from the Graham Holland camp.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Owen McKenna is dominating the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby outright with Pestana but it’s all about Graham Holland in the Michael Fortune Memorial Plate. Ballyhimikin Jet leads the way at 5/1 while his kennel mate Black Parachute is 7/1. There has already been support for Sweep The Yard from the same kennel with his odds trimmed into 10/1 from 12/1. The competition kicks off Friday night with the third round of the Derby on Saturday night. It’s going to be a wonderful weekend of racing at HQ.”

Track Record 4/1 from 5/1 to be Smashed Again in 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby

Graham Holland Eased to 13/8 from 5/4 to Become Winning Trainer
Tuesday 25th August

The track record was broken on Saturday night at Shelbourne Park in the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby as the Owen McKenna trained Pestana shattered the old record of 29.10 for the 550 yards trip to clock a new record of 28.99.

Punters backed the record to be broken into Even money from 5/4 and their prediction was right, but traders at BoyleSports have now cut the odds on the track record to be broken again during the Derby.

It’s now 4/1 from 5/1 that 28.99 will be smashed at Shelbourne Park and judging from all the interest, it might just happen.

Graham Holland, who has nine greyhounds through to the third round is the 13/8 favourite to be the winning trainer again but those odds have been eased from 5/4. Liam Dowling has six through and is the 11/4 second favourite cut from 10/3. Pat Buckley who trains the 7/1 second favourite Glengar Bale along with Deerjey Sydney (20/1), is 9/2 from 5/1.

Amongst the other bets being placed, Coolavanny Chick and Scooby Princess are 5/2 joint favourites to become the top bitch in the Derby while Ballymac Tas is 9/2. It’s 13/2 for a bitch to win the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

BoyleSports Champion Stakes winner Pestana is now the 11/2 favourite from 8/1 to win the BoyleSports Derby following his sensational 28.99 victory.

Sarah Kinsella, Spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “It was brilliant to see Pestana break the track record on Saturday night in the opening heat of the night to become the first dog in Ireland to dip under 29 seconds over the trip of 550 yards. Punters are now backing the chances of the track record to be broken again with those odds now at 4/1, cut from 5/1. The track is absolutely flying at the moment so we will be keeping an eye on the odds as it won’t be a huge shock should the record go again the way some of these greyhounds are running.”

Pestana 11/2 from 8/1 & New Favourite to Win The BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby

Glengar Bale 7/1 from 12/1 Following Blistering 29.15 Victory
August 23rd 2020

There was plenty of excitement at HQ over the weekend as the second round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby took centre stage, but it was Pestana who stole the show yet again.

Pestana became the first greyhound in history to break the 29 seconds barrier over the 550 yards trip on Saturday night as this Owen McKenna trained talent burst from trap one to make all in a dominant performance to record 28.99.

The old track record was recorded in 2015 by Tyrur Van Gaal but Pestana shattered the 29.10 record and has now seen his price plummet into the new 11/2 favourite to win the Derby from 8/1. Newinn Taylor was a brilliant runner-up to Pestana but remains 12/1 to grab the title.

Glengar Bale stole the headlines on Friday night as the Pat Buckley trained youngster skipped round in 29.15, the fastest time of the night with a brilliant sectional of 16.93 to the third bend. His odds were cut into the new 7/1 favourite from 12/1 before Pestana broke the track record 24 hours later.

Ballymac Cooper equalled the previous track record of 29.10 on Saturday which has seen his odds tumble into 10/1 from 16/1 placing him alongside his kennel mate and heat winner on the same night, Ballymac Wild. It was a superb night for trainer Liam Dowling as he had two other heat winners with Ballymac Anton (20/1) and Great Name That (50/1 from 66/1), giving the Kerry man a four-timer on the card. Indeed Ballymac Tas (50/1) also qualified along with Antigua Sands (66/1) meaning the super trainer has six through to the third round.

Epic Hero has been backed into 20/1 from 66/1 following his win on Friday night to clock 29.19 for trainer Thomas O’Donovan. This Produce Stakes finalist was very impressive on just his ninth career start.

Last year’s finalist Our Surprise who unfortunately had to withdraw due to an injury before the final, was back to winning ways as he clocked a flashy 29.53 coming from behind to snatch victory on the line. This Laurence Jones trained black beauty is now 33/1 from 50/1 to win the Derby.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “What an incredible weekend of action for the second round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby. The stands might have been empty but the atmosphere in the kennels was electric as Pestana broke the track record to clock 28.99. Pestana is now the new 11/2 favourite from 8/1 while Glengar Bale, who was the favourite for about 24 hours after his 29.15 win on Friday night, is the 7/1 second favourite from 12/1. The third round starts Saturday with eights heats, and it promises to be another magical night at HQ.”

Pestana the New 8/1 Favourite from 12/1 for BoyleSports Greyhound Derby

Pat Buckley Trained Glengar Bale 14/1 from 16/1
Sunday 16th August

The Owen McKenna trained Pestana was the talk of Shelbourne Park over the weekend as the BoyleSports Champion Stakes winner clocked the fastest time of the opening round for the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

Pestana made all from a tough draw wearing the orange jacket in five but showed his brilliant early pace into the first turn to record a blistering 29.21 winning by a length to Razldazl Peaky on Friday night. Pestana was cut into the new 10/1 favourite following his performance but has since been trimmed further into 8/1 after the draw was made on Saturday night with this flying machine getting that all-important trap one in the second round.

Another top-class performance from Friday night was the Pat Buckley trained Glengar Bale who skipped round Shelbourne Park in 29.40 to win by 4½ lengths and really caught the eye. His strong pace has seen his odds nibbled into 14/1 from 16/1 and is one of many future stars in Buckley’s impressive kennel as his Deerjet Sydney was another winner in 29.39. This son of Droopys Sydney – Madgies Wish was fast away from the boxes and is now 20/1 from 33/1.

Last year’s Derby champion Lenson Bocko grabbed 3rd spot in the race won by Deerjet Sydney with his odds eased out to 12/1 from 10/1 favourite. Newinn Taylor, who was beaten for the first time in his career by Toolmaker Sydney, remains 12/1 while Toolmaker Sydney is 16/1 from 20/1.

Coolavanny Chick caught the eye when winning the first race on Saturday night with her odds crumbling into 33/1 from 50/1. This flying machine dominated the home straight after picking up the leader Newinn Lester to clock a very fast 29.39 coming from behind for owner Noel Hehir. That was just her 8th career start and she is certainly one to keep an eye on for the future.

Newinn Sheedy was another big ante post mover following his 29.47 victory to land heat 19. Trained by Graham Holland who had a successful weekend with numerous qualifiers, Sheedy has tumbled into 33/1 from 66/1 with Knocknaboul Syd a length and half back in second with his odds also trimmed into 33/1 from 50/1.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “What a fantastic weekend of racing at Shelbourne Park for the opening round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby. Pestana was the fastest heat winner in 29.21 which has earned him a new spot in the betting as this Owen McKenna star is now the new 8/1 favourite from 12/1. Lenson Bocko has been eased out to 12/1 from 10/1. Coolavanny Chick was very impressive and is now 33/1 from 50/1. The draw for the second round has been completed and we are looking forward to another weekend of top-class action.”
